The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear. ”

Welcome to CSUITE, Reputations' interview with some of the movers and shakers among our clients. Check out our interview with Mark Betteridge, Technology Infrastructure Evangelist and Executive Director of Discovery Parks.

October - Mark Betteridge

Q. What reputation does Vancouver have when it comes to science, technology and research?

We have what my father called the “British Disease”. This is a great place for dreaming-up and starting-up business. It is not a very good city for the sales and manufacturing continuum or growing start-ups into big companies. This is the reason my family left the UK over 40 years ago.

Q. What reputation are you striving for Vancouver to have with your involvement in Discovery Parks?

Nothing would be better than if we could help Vancouver build a star company with 500 employees and a billion dollars in revenue.

Q. What do businesses most often claim to be but generally are not?

Similar to most people – good listeners. My impression is that many companies and mad scientists build what they want and not what the customer wants. Businesses are too often innovation and product focused rather than market focused.

Q. What or where is your greatest extravagance?

A warm beach with all the accoutrements and with no BlackBerry – and a good glass of wine.

Q. If you could snap your fingers and reinvent your life, who or what would you be?

For the what, an international rally driver and philanthropist. For the who, Bill Clinton or Tony Blair. They seem to have all of the interesting and exciting aspects of life: great challenges and the power to fix problems and get things done.
